About Alex
Alex Alorro is an educator and consultant with over 17 years of weaving equity and inclusion into organizations’ core missions. Alex works with nonprofit, corporate, and educational services organizations to guide them in dismantling oppressive practices and challenging the status quo.
Alex is a former Chief Diversity Officer within the State University of New York system and led campus-wide initiatives to enhance inclusion, equity, justice, and access. Their efforts accelerated culture change, policy development, and cohesion among staff and students. They established and led the college’s inaugural Diversity Action Council and fostered the creation of student organizations like the Black Student Union, Latine Student Union, and Queer Union. Alex also developed and conducted training on culturally responsive pedagogies, collaborated with Human Resources on integrating equity-focused competencies, and organized grassroots community advocacy efforts.
Alex has also served on the executive team of an arts nonprofit that promoted the engagement and success of underserved high school students. During this contract, they improved systems and structures within the organization focused on equity and access. This included the creation of a college success program with intentional learning outcomes centered around identity development, intercultural awareness, and academic support. During their time as the Director of Housing Operations at SUNY's Fashion Institute of Technology, they oversaw all operations of the residence halls that housed 2300+ students each year and acted as the final responder for on-campus crises. In that role, they advocated for students by implementing gender-inclusive housing, all-gender facility upgrades, pronoun & chosen name policies, and enhanced access for students with disabilities.
They serve as Vice President/Chair of the Personnel & Finance Committee for Cornell Cooperative Extension for Sullivan County’s Board of Directors, a Community Health Champion/Equity Advocate for Sullivan 180, and are a founding board member of the Sullivan County Youth Action Council.
Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from New York University and a Master of Arts in Higher & Postsecondary Education from Columbia University. In their free time, Alex volunteers with Achilles International as a Guide Runner for athletes with disabilities.
